In preparing for our cross-country journey via Amtrak (Milwaukee to Chicago on the Hiawatha, followed by Chicago to San Francisco on the Zepher), we went over lists and lists of what to bring along. What does one do for nearly three days on an Amtrak train other than looking at all of the beautiful scenery outside the window? Having never been on a long distance trip via an Amtrak train, I really had no idea what to expect. We have an 11-year-old, so I imagined it would be very exciting to start off with and that after some time (approx. 5-6 hours) the novelty would wear off leaving us stir crazy and possibly motion sick. So I started making lists of what to pack... books, magazines, cards, cribbage, knitting, iPOD, Nintendo Gameboy DS, beading equipment, coloring supplies, homework (for the two days Jake would miss school), and DVDs. Yes, DVDs. That was it. What better movies to watch while treking across the great United States of America, than movies that either take place on a train or movies with great train scenes?! So we completed our list by including "movies taking place on a train" to watch while enroute.
North by Northwest
Narrow Margin
Murder on the Orient Express
From Russia with Love
Strangers on a Train
Harry Potter
Darjeeling Express
The French Connection
The Fugitive
These will be amongst the many ways we will keep ourselves busy while enroute to San Francisco, CA. More to come on the trip soon!
